Safi Sana’s steering committee

Two years ago Safi Sana founded a Steering Committee which meets every quarter to discuss the progress and challenges of the Safi Sana project. The members are representatives of: The Energy Commission (EC), Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), PURC, EPA, ASHMA, GIDA, Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Local Government (MLGRD), Trend and SSGL.

The institutions where selected because the implementation of the project falls directly under their jurisdiction. For example:

  • The Ministry of Local Government is overall responsible for ‘Environmental Sanitation’ issues and has delegated responsibility for execution to the local Municipalities. In our case this is Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, ASHMA (ASHMA is not just a member of the committee, but also a project partner);
  • PURC is involved because the electricity Safi Sana generates will be sold to ECG, and PURC is the institution that regulates the feed-in tariff for power to the grid;
  • MOFA is involved because the project produces organic fertiliser for which we need a production license and a product certificate;
  • The Ministry of Energy, represented by the Energy Commission, takes part because the project is producing Energy and as such it has to be licensed.

Because of the critical role that the Energy Commission and MOFA play as licensing parties of our end products, it was agreed that they would co-chair the Steering Committee. The EC is taking the leading role with MOFA supporting.

The Members of the steering committee primarily play a role at the national level. Local stakeholders are represented in another committee: The Learning Alliance. The role of the Learning Alliance is to represent all key stakeholders in the Ashaiman Community during project discussions. It ensures that the voices of all stakeholders are represented in the planning and implementation of Project Activities, and it acts as an advocate for ASHMA to meet its obligations to the Project.

This committee is comprised of: the local municipality, government agencies, local representatives (assemblymen), community groups, NGOs, and private entities.
